Frequently asked questions

What is the 3rd pillar?
The 3rd pillar is the voluntary individual pension plan in Switzerland. It complements the benefits of the 1st pillar (AHV/AVS) and the 2nd pillar (BVG/LPP) to maintain your standard of living in retirement. It comes in two forms: pillar 3a (tied, with tax benefits) and pillar 3b (flexible, more freedom).
How much can I contribute to my 3rd pillar?
In 2026, the annual pillar 3a ceiling is CHF 7’258.- for employees affiliated with a pension fund (LPP/BVG). Self-employed individuals without LPP can contribute up to CHF 36’288.- (max. 20% of net income). Source: FSIO.
Is the comparison service really free?
Yes, our service is entirely free for you. We are compensated by our partners (banks and insurance companies) in the form of commissions. This does not affect the terms of your contract. You benefit from independent advice at no cost.
What is the difference between a bank and insurance 3rd pillar?
A bank 3rd pillar offers more flexibility (free contributions, no commitment period). An insurance 3rd pillar includes additional coverage (death, disability) and guarantees capital. The choice depends on your goals: pure savings or combined protection. Learn more.
Can I make up for missed contribution years?
Since January 1, 2026, yes. Retroactive buy-back allows you to fill 3a contribution gaps from previous years (starting from 2025), up to 10 years back. The maximum buy-back amount is CHF 7'258.- per gap year, in addition to your regular contribution. Learn more.
